Your California State LIFE Foundation

The LIFE foundation will be presenting our three new members at the Convention. Robin Kelley, Elise Buel and Anita McKean will be joining our team. Elise will be joining for a three-year term and Robin and Anita will be members-at-large. These amazing women will be presented at out annual Business Meeting, which will be held Friday evening, May 5, 6:30-7:15, at the Los Angeles, LAX Airport Marriott Convention. We will also be announcing the Grants that we will be giving this year.

The LIFE Foundation will also be having our annual Raffle at the Convention. We need donations for the Raffle and if you have something to donate, please notify me, donnafleischer@gmail.com. You can bring your item to the convention, but we would like to know ahead of time, what to expect.

Next month, March 18, the LIFE Board will be reviewing the Literacy Grants and Helene Going Green Grants that we have received and will be letting those people know what they have been granted shortly after we meet.

LIFE will again be having an Interest Session at Convention to SKYPE with Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the Rain. Last year at the LIFE author SKYPE, there was standing room only.

Elise Buel has been teaching for 26 years. She has taught a combination first and second grade class as well as a multi-age class of first to third grade students in the Reading Clinic at Mt. Vernon Elementary, San Bernardino. Currently, she is teaching first grade at Alessandro Elementary School in San Bernardino. Elise is also the first grade team leader at her school. She received her BA from Cal Poly, Pomona and her MA from the University of Redlands. Elise has been a member of DKG since 2002. She has been president and co-president of Epsilon Tau, Area XV as well as serving on various committees and Area XV boards. She is currently the Parliamentarian for the Alpha Pi, Area XV chapter and is also serving on the Area XV board as program chair as well.
Robin Kelley remembers, all I did was raise my hand and say, "I’ll do that.” Next thing I know it’s 17 years later and I have held every office in my chapter, been Area VI Director (2011-13) and am currently Treasurer for both my chapter and area. It was simple and has been very rewarding. Teaching has always been my calling, but I did not heed it until 1984. My son was 6 and my husband changed his life so I could go to college. I received my Liberal Arts degree from CSU Sacramento, and my teaching credentials from Chapman University in 1989. I taught for 25 years in the same rural school district in El Dorado County, CA. I spent 18 of those years teaching a Multi-age K-2 class, which as the kind of teacher that I am, was a precious gift. I thought I would teach forever, but I retired almost two years ago, and have not regretted one moment. I did not know I had it in me to be any kind of a leader, but DKG women see things and help them come to fruition. It is an honor to serve.
Professionally I have been an elementary school teacher for 34 years. I was a bilingual teacher for the majority of those years. I also facilitated trainings for teachers of English Language Learners. At the Chapter level I have been Chapter co-president and President . and Corresponding Secretary. At the Area level, I have served as Secretary, Membership Chair, Conference chair and Area V Director. I am now serving on the Leadership Development Committee. I am also currently the Chi State LIFE At-large liaison to the California State Leadership Committee.
